A website dedicated to the study of the historic but little-known "Filibuster" movement in mid-19th century United States. The movement was led by Venezuelan-born General Narciso López, who had been an general in the Spanish army in Cuba and was intent on freeing Cuba from Spanish rule. His failed one-day invasion of Cárdenas in 1850, with troops gathered from various southeastern states and General Ambrosio José Gonzales as second in command, has forever cast our fair city as Cuba's "Ciudad Bandera" or "Banner City." The website contains many images and relevant writings of the period, as well as articles written by the author: Antonio R. de la Cova Prof. of Lat. Am. Studies, Terra Haute, IN |
